Hey,

thought you guys might be able to help me out and answer a few questions about body modification. Im in my final year of my degree in herts. Not many people are modded round here so its difficult to find anyone to answer them!

I am currently writing my dissertation which is about whether body modification could ever be part of mainstream fashion. As fashion is a system of constant change and body modification is permanent/semi permanent. I am exploring permanent modifications and comparing to non permanent temporary alternatives. I am also looking at body modification and subculture and if body modification was to be fully integrated into mainstream fashion whether subculture would be affected.

Some of the case studies i am looking at are designer walter van bierendonck who often uses body modification in his work and in particular a photoshoot where he used 3-D makeup on his models which was inspired by orlans implants. I am looking at David bowies use of temorary modification in his music videos (dead man walking and little wonder) and in contrast marilyn mansons permanent body modifications in his videos. I am exploring Cindy Shermans non permanent modifications used to impersonate famous imagery. I am also looking at the NY club kids use of non permanent modifications as a way af playing with thier look and identity. I am looking at jeffree stars body modifications and how he has broken down a barrier in fashion and made it onto a catwalk modelling womens clothing and showing the tattoo sleeves on his arms.

If anyone could answer a few questions for me it would be really appreciated. You may be quoted and referenced in my essay so if you do reply then please be aware of this. All of the replies will be featured in my appendices. this essay will not be published.

1) Do you think body modification could ever be fully integrated into fashion?
2) Do you think non permanent body modifications would ever be accepted and embraced within subculture?
3) Do you think permanent body modifications would be accepted and embraced in the mainstream?
4)What social barriers do you come across as a result of being modified?
5) Would non permanent alternatives alleviate some of the discrimination that you come across?
6) Have you ever used non permanent body modifications? if yes...why?
7) Does being heavily modified affect you in everyday life eg finding a job?
8) Do you find being modified changes the way people treat you?
9) Do you find some people are intimidated by your modifications, if so... what sort of person is intimidated?
10) Do you think that body modification is more accepted in society today than say 10 years ago?
11) Do you think the future will be kinder to modified people due to social changes and acceptance of modification?

Thankyou
Marla

1) Do you think body modification could ever be fully integrated into fashion?
Possibly, in the future maybe. But there are too many different crowds around at the moment and whilst some people might enjoy body modification other might not and I don't think a large enough percentage of the populaiton will give a thumbs up to it anytime soon.

2) Do you think non permanent body modifications would ever be accepted and embraced within subculture?
I doubt it, if people like piercings they usually like the commitment of having it done. Same goes for all other body mods.

3) Do you think permanent body modifications would be accepted and embraced in the mainstream?
Pretty much the same answer as number 1.

4)What social barriers do you come across as a result of being modified?
Can't do some jobs for hygene reasons. Other employers just don't think you're 'presentable'. And some other folks just give ya dirty looks.

5) Would non permanent alternatives alleviate some of the discrimination that you come across?

I suppose yeah, especially for jobs because you could just remove them. But that doesn't appeal to me - the modification becomes a part of myself. Something permanent. I just couldn't see the point in non permanent mods.

6) Have you ever used non permanent body modifications? if yes...why?

Nope.

7) Does being heavily modified affect you in everyday life eg finding a job?

Answer to No.4 even though im not that heavily modded.

8) Do you find being modified changes the way people treat you?

No.5 and No.7 although people who like mods think they're cool. So I supose to get cool points from it sometimes haha.

9) Do you find some people are intimidated by your modifications, if so... what sort of person is intimidated?
Touched on this also, but mainly older people. and 'snobbish' types. Oh and chavs sometimes.

10) Do you think that body modification is more accepted in society today than say 10 years ago?

Absoloutely

11) Do you think the future will be kinder to modified people due to social changes and acceptance of modification?
Yes, but I don't think it'll ever be considered the norm. Not anytime soon anyway.

1) Do you think body modification could ever be fully integrated into fashion?
I think it already is, my piercings are all part of my own personal style and 'fashion'
2) Do you think non permanent body modifications would ever be accepted and embraced within subculture?
Maybe, if you fancy something that is only gonna be there for a certain amount of time
3) Do you think permanent body modifications would be accepted and embraced in the mainstream?
They have been a little, but don't get me started on body modifciation and finding jobs! I think it is pathetic, I even got told to wear a clear stud in my nose piercing, how long have nose piercings been around, I think people need to accept that we are thee 21st century and millions of people have body mods
4)What social barriers do you come across as a result of being modified?
I don't know if it is a social barrier, but it is hard to find jobs, I get alot of funny looks but nothing too bad, I have all the friends I need
5) Would non permanent alternatives alleviate some of the discrimination that you come across?
Yes, but I would never take out my piercings, people should accept how I am
6) Have you ever used non permanent body modifications? if yes...why?
Do stick on tattoo's count? HAHA
7) Does being heavily modified affect you in everyday life eg finding a job?
I am not 'heavily' modified I would say but yes it does effect finding another job and I have to wear retainers etc at work
8) Do you find being modified changes the way people treat you?
Yes, just shows you which people are open minded and who are not
9) Do you find some people are intimidated by your modifications, if so... what sort of person is intimidated?
Yes, older people, some children
10) Do you think that body modification is more accepted in society today than say 10 years ago?
Yes, but it still needs accepting more
11) Do you think the future will be kinder to modified people due to social changes and acceptance of modification?
I think it might be slightly, but there will always be one arsehole out there to stop you
